Presentation Title: Characterizing Slope Stability Issues Along Western New York Streams
Presenters: Todd Swackhamer, P.E. and Donald R. McMahon, P.E.
There are numerous examples of slope failures along stream banks across Western New York. The causes of these failures, however, are unique to each site and usually fall somewhere on a spectrum between exclusively geotechnical conditions and exclusively stream dynamics. Mr. Swackhamer and Mr. McMahon will discuss methods they have developed to characterize these failures. Starting on a regional level and successively narrowing the view in on the site, they will discuss different methods used to understand the causes of the stability issues.
Mr. Swackhamer and Mr. McMahon will conclude the discussion by presenting case histories of bank failures in Western New York. The case histories will demonstrate different methods used to characterize the problems, where each falls on the geotechnical-stream dynamic spectrum, and the chosen remediation for each.
